Where is taking off your shoes in Japan? (use tatami room)

Do you know the Tatami in Japan?

Please keep in mind the followings if you ever come to Japan.

When you go into a Tatami room.

As soon as you enter a house in Japan, you will see a Genkan (玄関) entrance hall.
Genkan is approx. 1.5 meters square space which separate living space from outside.

This is where you need to take off your shoes and you can wear slippers in the flooring or carpet.
So, no matter how traditional or modern a house, We,Japanese remove our shoes upon entering.
However, you should not wear slippers in tatami room.
 
In tatami room, there are no chairs, and we sit down directly on the tatami mat.
As far as features, tatami has a very nice smell.
